Life Lesson: Sept 4

4 Sep

Meditate:  Read Hebrews 11:29–12:2.

Sing:  Faith of Our Fathers

Verse 1
Faith of our fathers living still
In spite of dungeon fire and sword
O how our hearts beat high with joy
Whene’er we hear that glorious word

Chorus
Faith of our father’s holy faith
We will be true to thee till death

Verse 2
Our fathers chained in prisons dark
Were still in heart and conscience free
How sweet would be their children’s fate
If they like them could die for Thee

 Verse 3
Faith of our fathers we will strive
To win all nations unto Thee
And through the truth that comes from God
Mankind shall then be truly free

Verse 4
Faith of our fathers we will love
Both friend and foe in all our strife
And preach Thee too as love knows how
By kindly words and virtuous life

Message
We all have someone who we think is the highest example of faith and Christian living. Most of us can think of someone that we look up to and want to emulate. The reality is that these are just people who trust God, by faith, to walk them through the journey that He has planned for them.
I had always looked up to my father as a “real man of God.” I wanted to be like him and I wanted to have a relationship with God just like he did. It was hard when I grew up and began to see his faults. He was still a good man, but I suddenly began to realize that he was not perfect and that was alright. He was on a journey. There were others that I met in CFO. There were speakers and song leaders that I believed could probably walk on water. As I got older, I began to hear things and see things that shed light on the truth that these were just sinful human beings. Like me! These people were sinful, they were mortal, they were fallible, and their only hope was to walk by faith. The good news is that I could look at their lives and learn from them. They are part of the great cloud of witnesses that surrounds me and by their examples (good and bad), I can learn to walk the journey that God has laid out for me.
God has a plan for each one of us. If you doubt that, consider Paul’s word to the Ephesians, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do (2:10).” Sometimes we see a glimmer of what that is and other times we feel that we are in the dark. The good news is that we can trust him to guide and direct our path to get us to the good that he has planned for us. It is also good news to know that we are not alone. God gives us people to walk with us on this journey.
We have two roles in our walk with God: 1) Walk by faith. Keep our eyes on the prize and use those who have gone on before us as examples. 2) Be an example. Remember, there are people coming up behind us that need someone to guide. Is your life a good example for those who need it?

Blessing
Consider one or two people who have helped strengthen you in your journey with Jesus. Write them a note and tell them how they have helped and pray a blessing for them. If they are no longer living, see if you can track down a family member and send the note and blessing to them.

Move
Walk through every room in your home. Picture each room as a stop on your journey through life and ask God to reveal a message about that stop. Seek God’s leading concerning your walk in the future, by lessons learned in the past.

Create
Rewrite today’s song in your own words. This does not have to rhyme and it does not have to fit the music. Allow yourself creative license.

Nourish
Do not get so busy with the journey today that you forget to eat. Eat slow and healthy today. Do not rush the journey.

Rest
Find 10 minutes to be still. Do nothing during this time. This is God’s time to renew you in mind, body and spirit.

Recreation
Whatever you do today, take a minute and be intentionally present in the moment. See what there is to see. Close your eyes and smell. Take time to taste and to touch something along the way. Remind yourself to hear what is happening.

Pray
Spend some quiet time asking God who he wants you to help or mentor as they walk through life. Begin by praying for this person and then ask God how you should take the next step.

Snacks
Eat something with a great smell, interesting looks, unusual texture, and maybe even a curious sound. Let taste be the last thing you discover about your snack.

World Prayer
Pray for those who do not walk with God and feel alone today.

Sleep
Thank God that he is always present in your journey.

From morning until night, God wants us to worship and commune with Him. Start your day in His Word and then weave throughout the day these elements of devotion, worship, contemplation and service to others.

Life Lesson: March 13

13 Mar

Meditate
Exodus 14:8. The LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, so that he pursued the Israelites, who were marching out boldly.

Sing
“Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.
He is trampling our the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored.
He hath loosed the fateful lightening of his terrible swift sword.
His truth is marching on.
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.”

Message
When given the choice between fight or flight, the latter usual goes first. I do not intend to start out that way, as a matter of fact, I do not even think about it. The reality is that the moment I am asked to do something hard, I cower. I can make up excuses so fast you would never believe I even had time to process the request.   Hebrews 4:16 tells us that we can approach the throne of grace with boldness. If we can be bold before God…. You know, the God who wiped out the entire Egyptian army in one wave of His hand? If we can boldly approach Him, what makes us cower in the face of difficulties? Do we really think that money problems, difficult people, loss of work or pain can do more than the Great King of Kings whom we will spend eternity with?

Perspective. It is all about perspective. Once we realize that God is for us, we can begin to grasp that no one can be against us. The Israelites marched out boldly, we can do the same.

Blessing
Text or e-mail today’s song lyrics and scripture to someone whom God lays on your heart.

Move
Make up movements as you sing this song or repeat the words:
“We are marching in the light of God.
We are marching in the light of God.
We are marching in the light of God.
We are marching in the light of God.
We are marching, marching, we are marching,

Oh, we are marching in the light of God.
We are marching, marching, we are marching,
Oh, we are marching in the light of God.”

Create
Look at the words, Marching Out Boldly, and do an acrostic of the names or characters of God, which are greater than our troubles.

Nourish
Check the calories and portion sizes of your meals today. Are you eating a healthy and reasonable amount? Are you drinking enough water?

Rest
Find 10 minutes to be still. Do nothing during this time. This is God’s time to renew you in mind, body and spirit.

Recreation
March around your home and claim that space for God and His work.

Pray
Pray for the leaders of your church; anyone in authority or leadership. Do not forget the maintenance and cleaning personnel.

Snacks
Have some green tea tonight. Hot or cold. Add some fresh lemon.

World Prayer
Pray for the president and those in our Federal Government.

Sleep
Once you are in bed, tighten and relax each part of your body, from your scalp to your toes. Remember your fingers, abdomen and your face.

Life Lesson: December 19

19 Dec

Meditate
Read Romans 5:3-5.
God said, “I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army”… – Exodus 14:4

Sing
“To God be the glory, great things he has done.
So loved he the world that he gave us his son.
Who yielded his life, an atonement for sin
and opened the life gates that all may go in.
Praise the Lord, Praise the Lord,
let the earth hear his voice.
Praise the Lord, praise the lord,
let the people rejoice.
O Come to the Father, through Jesus the son
and give him the glory, great things he has done.”

Message
Why do I have to deal with people who want to hurt me? Why do I have to struggle with lack of finances? Why did I have to go through, not one, but two divorces? Why did my children have to feel such pain? Why did my friend have to die? Why have I had to cry all of the tears? Why, Why, Why? Why, in my 39 years, have I had to cope with so much garbage?

3,300 years ago, God took the Israelites through the Red Sea. Why did they have to “run” from Pharaoh and his armies? Why did they have to fear? Because 3,300 years later, we are still praising God and giving him glory for what he did.

Many times I have been able to minister to people, share their pain and help them. How? By giving glory to God and telling the stories about how he brought me through my bad times. Paul says that our struggles produce perseverance than character, and then hope. Sharing that hope with a hurting world makes sense out of my difficulties.
